After a couple of games of Topgolf in Chigwell on Sunday we stumbled across this traditional and cosy English pub a short ten minute drive away. The Three Jolly Wheelers has a gorgeous wintery and Christmas atmosphere with the smell of mulled wine hitting you as you get to the bar and a roaring log fire crackling away. The pub is already serving up a traditional festive menu and I couldn’t resist having my first Christmas lunch of the season.
From a choice of four starters including soup and a twist on the classic prawn cocktail, I opted for the Oven-baked button and portobello mushrooms. The mushrooms were cooked in a garlic and cheddar cheese sauce and topped with crunchy sweet chestnuts. Served with two thin slices of rustic bread this was a warming and tasty dish, just light enough to leave room for the main event.
As I said I had to have my first Christmas turkey lunch, there was something about this place that made me feel so Christmassy I broke all my usual rules and tucked into one in November. (Besides it’s almost December right!)
The roast came complete with two thick slices of moist turkey, roast potatoes, roasted parsnips and carrots, Brussels sprouts and the all important stuffing wrapped in bacon. I’m not going to lie I was slightly disappointed it was missing a pigs in blanket but as soon as I started tucking in there was more than enough on my plate to keep me happy. The parsnips were cooked to perfection with a crispy almost roast potato like skin and fluffy middle. Honey roasted carrots gave the plate a contrast with a hard and crunchy texture and the sprouts were importantly firm and fresh. Controversially the Hand carved Turkey Roast came with a Yorkshire pudding, something I steer clear of on Christmas day but still enjoyed and demolished.
Feeling stuffed I was adamant I didn’t need a dessert but when the time came couldn’t help myself ordering the Orange-scented Creme Brulee. I love a good Creme Brulee and this definitely hit the spot. Slightly different to usual in that the custard wasn’t smooth but this was due to the orange zest giving that warm and citrus taste.
A genuine and delightful three course Christmas lunch for a mere £22. Attentive service with a smile throughout I’m sure I’ll be back again to trial that Sunday Roast Platter complete with slices of beef, lamb and Turkey all on one plate. Yum!
