Eat Out: A quaint spot for brunch, lunch or cake at Fitzbillies, Cambridge

From the outside Fitzbillies looks like a traditional and authentic cake shop thanks to its brown awning and windows dressed with Chelsea buns, cupcakes and pastries. But heading inside and past the counter there is a bright and buzzing cafe where couples and groups of friends are enjoying strong flat white’s and catching up over avocado on toast. This was my first visit to this gorgeous and historical city and I couldn’t help myself looking around at every opportunity.

Fitzbillies is by no means a greasy spoon type café but boasted a menu not too dissimilar to one you’d find in Soho or Shoreditch.  Eggs benedict, Granola, Smoked salmon and Prosecco was on offer but no doubt a slightly different clientele and atmosphere about the place. People watching in any city is fascinating but Cambridge quite literally has people from all walks of life and cultures thanks to the tourism and student talent it attracts.

But what you really want to hear about is the food right! Trying to be good and staying away from bread before my holiday I ordered the Shakshuka. I was also quite fascinated by the name of this dish as I hadn’t ever seen it before and love trying new things. On further research I’ve discovered that Shakshuka is a Middle Eastern dish of Tunisian and Moroccan Jewish origin. It reminded me of my Spanish Eggs recipe a little with the eggs being poached in a sauce of tomatoes, onions and peppers and it did in fact come with bread, which I wasn’t expecting. Knowing how hard it can be to poach eggs in a sauce like this I thoroughly enjoyed how runny the yolk was. You could taste the quality in the eggs and all of the elements of the dish, but what really set it apart and topped the flavour was the green sauce dolloped on top. A mix of herbs this was both sweet and sharp with coriander, basil and vinegar really coming through.

A great start to the day, you should check out the website for their lunch and afternoon tea options I’m sure they won’t disappoint the cakes looked to die for!
