Asda’s ‘Wonky Veg’ Boxes

Having tuned in to Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast on Channel 4 last Friday I was shocked by the amount of fruit and veg food waste that goes on in the UK.  Naive some may say but true.

From a personal point of view, and perhaps this is from living in Spain for many years where these kind of regulations are non-existent, I enjoy going to a local market and picking out large odd shaped peppers or slightly alien looking sweet potatoes.  They are always packed with so much more flavour thanks to not being harvested too early in order to align with pressures and specifications.

Having launched in a select few stores last year as a trial, Asda has rolled the ‘Wonky Veg Box’ out for £3.50 in 128 stores.  The boxes work out cheaper than regular shaped fruit and veg, and there will 20 boxes available per store as part of a trial to see if the box is a hit with customers

Now all I need to do is get to my local Asda!

Find out if your local store will be stocking the boxes here

  2. I love the idea of this! It’s funny how people are put off fruit and veg when it doesn’t look ‘perfect’ – they tend to taste exactly the same!

So true! Unfortunately I haven’t managed to get hold of one yet, but must mean they’re in demand which is a good sign!
